How to Self-Publish a Book: The Complete Beginner's Path
Self-publishing means you are the publisher: you write the book, prepare it for print and digital, and release it — usually through Amazon KDP — keeping creative control and the lion's share of royalties. I've done it ten times. Here's the full path, start to finish.
Step 1 — Finish the manuscript
Obvious, but worth saying: don't start publishing a half-written book. Finish the draft, revise it, and have at least one other person read it before you touch formatting. Everything downstream gets easier when the manuscript is solid.
Step 2 — Format for print and ebook
Your manuscript needs to become a print-ready file (usually PDF) and a reflowable ebook file. Trim size, margins, fonts, front matter — it matters more than beginners expect. How to Format a Book for KDP
Step 3 — Design the cover
Readers judge books by covers — that's not cynicism, it's data. Your cover needs to signal genre, look professional at thumbnail size, and carry a readable title. How to Create a Book Cover That Sells
Step 4 — Publish through KDP
Upload your files to Amazon KDP, fill in the book details (title, description, categories, keywords), set your price, and hit publish. The book is typically live within 72 hours. How Amazon KDP Works, Explained Plainly
Step 5 — Launch it like it matters
Publishing isn't the finish line — it's the starting gun. Tell your audience, ask early readers for honest reviews, and keep talking about the book after week one. Most self-published books fail from obscurity, not quality.
