How to Format a Book for KDP

How to Format a Book for KDP (Print and Ebook)

Formatting is where manuscripts become books. Print and ebook need different files and different thinking — here's what each one requires.

Print formatting

Choose a trim size first (6" x 9" is the standard for most nonfiction). Set proper margins with extra room on the inside edge (the gutter), add page numbers, and build front matter (title page, copyright) and back matter in order. Export as a print-ready PDF. KDP's previewer will flag issues — fix every one before approving.

Ebook formatting

Ebooks reflow — readers change fonts and sizes, so forget fixed layouts. Use clean heading styles, simple formatting, no text boxes or floating images. A well-structured Word document or EPUB converts cleanly; a messy one produces a messy ebook.

The preview step (don't skip it)

KDP's online previewer shows exactly what buyers will see on every device. Click through the whole book. Check the cover thumbnail, the table of contents links, and the first pages — that's what the "Look inside" feature shows shoppers.

Tools that help

You can format in Word or Google Docs with careful styles, or use dedicated tools like Atticus, Vellum (Mac), or Draft2Digital's free formatter. Hiring a formatter is also reasonable — it's a one-time cost per book.
